How to grow peas?

Varieties

Supreme, sarsabz, pea 2009, meteor FSd, Climax improved, samrinazard, pea-8,H-57

Soil:

Peas tolerate a wide range of soil from light sandy to heavy clay, Well drained slightly acid soil, pH optimum 5.5–6.5, Peas do not tolerate waterlogged soils

Sowing time:

  1. Early: last week of September to 1st week of October
  2. Late : last week of October to 1st week of November

Temperature:

A cool growing season (optimum 20°c) is necessary for obtaining good pea production.

How to grow:

Peas are propagated from seeds. Seed is sown at a depth of 4-7cm at a rate of 65-280 kg/ha.

Row*Row= 15-30cm

It takes 10-14 days for emergence. Peas have hypogeal emergence, which means that the cotyledons remain below the surface. Flowering start about 45 days after planting and lasts 2-4 weeks. The pea growing season varies from 80-150 days depending on temperature and rainfall.

Irrigation:

Irrigate peas plants after 4 days interval. Water is necessary especially at flowering and pod filling.

Fertilizer:

Peas do not need fertilizer particularly N. Nitrogen addition is necessary when nodulation is poor. Usually nodules will appear on the roots 2-4 weeks after the emergence of seedling.

Irrigation up to seed filling +Phosphorus P120 kg ha-1+ Potassium K100 kg ha-1 is good for vegetative and reproductive parameters similarly highest seed yield 2.63 tons ha-1.

Harvesting:

Garden peas are picked by hand before the seeds are fully matured and the seeds stay in the pods. For dry peas the moisture content has to be less than 13%.
