How to grow strawberry
'Verities:
Chandler', 'Corona', 'Douglas', 'Tufts', 'Gorella' and
'Toro'
Soil:
well-drained, silty loam, medium-high land having soil pH
6.8 with heavy rainfall, high humidity, high temperature, and relatively long
days during the month
Sowing temperature:
27c°- 24c°
Row-Row and plant-plant distance:
60cm x 40cm.
To minimize water use, strawberry planting must be mulched
in the fall for good winter survival and maximum yields.
Fertilizer
Apply fertilizer at the rate of 120, 40, 110, 25, 4, and
2 kg/ha of N, P, K, S, Zn, and B, respectively. The entire amount of cow dung
(5 t/ha), half MoP, and all of other fertilizers except urea were applied as
basal and were incorporated into the soil during final land preparation. The
urea was applied as top dress in three equal installments at 15, 30, and 45 DAT
(days after transplanting), respectively. The rest half of MoP was applied at 45
DAT.
Irrigation:
Apply Common irrigations after 5 to 10 days interval till
plant establishment. Intercultural operations such as weeding and earthing up
were done as and when necessary.
M To minimize water use, strawberry planting must be mulched
in the fall for good winter survival and maximum yields.
Mulching:
For mulching, 13.5 kg straw mulch was used where the
thickness of the straw was 2 cm. Black polythene mulch with 25-micron thickness
was used to cover the entire plot. Both mulches were installed manually on the
entire bed. Black plastic mulch with small holes was stretched tightly on the soil
surface after 40 days from transplanting for strawberry seedlings to grow up
Harvesting:
Harvested at the ripening stage when three-fourths of the fruit
skin turned red.
